PROCEDURES AND EFFECTIVENESS

What is vaginismus?

Involuntary contraction or tensing of the muscles surrounding the vagina is known as vaginalismus. Among the reproductive organs of women is the vagina. It establishes a connection between the external body and the lowest section of the uterus, or the cervix. The attempt to penetrate the vagina by a penis, finger, tampon, or medical tool causes these inadvertent muscular spasms. Both moderate discomfort and severe pain are possible during the spasms.

How common is vaginismus?

Experts are unsure of the prevalence of vaginismus. Many people might be too ashamed to discuss the issue with their medical professionals.

Who might get vaginismus?

After having intercourse for the first time, a person may experience vaginismus symptoms in their late teens or early adult years. The disorder may also manifest itself during a patient’s initial attempt to use a tampon or during a pelvic exam performed at a medical facility.

What causes vaginismus?

Medical professionals are unsure of the cause of vaginismus in certain individuals. Sexual, psychological, and physical problems may result from it. Vaginal pain can be exacerbated by yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and UTIs.

Factors that may contribute to vaginismus include:

  • Anxiety disorders.
  • Childbirth injuries, such as vaginal tears.
  • Prior surgery.
  • Fear of sex or negative feelings about sex, perhaps due to past sexual abuse, rape or trauma.

What conditions are similar to vaginismus?

These problems can cause symptoms similar to vaginismus:
Vaginal atrophy: Vaginal atrophy is the term for the thinner, drier vaginal lining caused by a lack of oestrogen following menopause. Provoked vestibulodynia, or vulvar vestibulitis: Dyspareunia, or painful sex, is the result of this illness. From the moment of initial entry, people may experience pain.

What are the symptoms of vaginismus?
Signs of vaginismus include:

  • Discomfort or pain during vaginal penetration.
  • Inability to have sex or have a pelvic exam due to vaginal muscle spasms or pain.
  • Painful intercourse.

You should see a doctor if you have painful sex or pain while inserting a tampon. These feelings aren’t normal.

How is vaginismus diagnosed?

In addition to your medical and sexual history, your healthcare practitioner will inquire about your symptoms. A pelvic exam can assist in excluding other issues.
